Like general skin, facial skin types can be divided into several categories, namely normal skin types, oily skin, dry skin, and sensitive facial skin types. Some people also have a combination of skin types in different areas. The type of facial skin depends on several factors, namely the water content of the skin which will affect the elasticity of the skin, the oil content that affects the softness and nutrition of the skin, and the level of skin sensitivity to certain substances. Your skin type can change with age or due to the influence of other factors, such as genetic factors and illness.

Getting to know the type of facial skin and the right treatment

Normal facial skin

Luckily for you, the owner of a normal facial skin type, because this skin type tends to have a balance between the amount of water content and oil content, so it's not too dry but not too oily. This type of facial skin usually rarely has skin problems, is not too sensitive, pores are almost invisible, and looks radiant. Treatment for normal facial skin types tends to be easier, you just use special facial skin care for normal skin. Use a gentle facial cleansing soap and don't rub your face too harshly. You can rinse your face with warm water then dry. If you find that your skin is dry or oily, try a different cleanser.

Dry facial skin

Dry facial skin types lack moisture in the outer layer of skin. This results in cracks on the surface of the skin, and will feel dry when touched. The owner of this type of dry facial skin usually has pores that are almost invisible, the outer surface of the skin looks rough and dull, and the skin is less elastic. This type of skin is also more easily reddened, itchy, scaly, and inflamed. Dry facial skin can be caused or exacerbated by genetic factors, aging, hormonal changes, cold weather, sunlight, ultraviolet radiation, hot showers for too long, or ingredients contained in soap products, cosmetics, cleansers, to drugs. Treatments for dry skin types can include:
  • Use a gentle facial cleanser that does not contain alcohol or fragrances.
  • Avoid bathing and washing your face with warm water for too long.
  • Use a moisturizer after washing your face. For owners of dry skin, it is recommended to use a special moisturizer for dry skin.
  • Use facial cleansing soap with moisturizing ingredients, such as emollients or colloidal oatmeal.

Oily facial skin

Oily facial skin types are usually due to the production of sebum from the sebaceous glands (oil glands) that are excess. Sebum is an oil substance derived from fat. While sebaceous glands are glands that are under the surface of the skin. Although sebum functions to help protect and moisturize the skin, excess sebum will cause facial skin to become oily, clogged pores and cause acne. The factors that influence the high production of sebum in a person's skin are genetic factors, hormonal changes, or even stress. Oily skin types tend to have large pores, look shiny but dull, and are usually accompanied by blackheads, zits and black spots. Treatment for oily skin types can be by:
  • Diligently wash your face every day, at least twice a day. Avoid facial cleansing products with detergent content, and use a gentle face wash containing glycerin.
  • Greaseproof paper. Although it does not prevent excess sebum production, this paper oil can help minimize excess oil on the face.
  • Clay cosmetics. This type of cosmetics helps absorb oil on the facial skin and treat many skin conditions. You can also use clay or clay masks as a treatment.
  • Honey masks, lemon egg masks, aloe masks, tomato masks, almond masks, and jojoba oil can also be treatments for oily skin types.
  • Avoid unhealthy foods such as fried foods, high sugar foods, and processed foods.
  • When the skin is too oily, reduce the use of makeup, especially foundation. Choose water based products not oil based. Look for products labeled noncomedogenic that tend not to clog pores.
  • If general facial cleansers are not enough to reduce oily skin, try products that contain acids, such as benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, glycolic acid, or beta-hydroxy acid.
  • Use sunscreen and oil-free moisturizers.
  • If a product that is sold freely on the market is not enough to help treat oily skin, you are advised to consult a dermatologist. Lasers, chemical peels, and creams mixed with tretinoin, adapalene, or tazarotene can help treat oily skin.

Sensitive facial skin

Type of sensitive facial skin has a low sensitivity to several things. This skin type is very easy to experience allergies or irritations, and rashes as a reaction to certain factors, such as the environment, plants, food, and even cosmetic products. Sensitive facial skin will easily experience redness, itching, dryness, flaking, and burning when it comes in contact with the trigger. Treatment of sensitive skin types can be identified by triggers that cause allergic reactions or irritation. Use a gentle face soap and rinse with warm water. And avoid rubbing the face. Try not to use facial care products that contain alcohol, acids, and fragrances. Try to replace your skin care products with products that contain aloe vera, chamomile, green tea, polyphenols, and oats.

Combination facial skin

Combination facial skin type is a combination of oily and dry skin. A person with a combination skin type usually has oily skin that is concentrated in the T-zone (chin, nose, and forehead), while his cheeks remain dry. This type of facial skin can be influenced by genetic factors and puberty, which is when the oil glands increase sebum production. Sometimes a variety of facial skin care products are needed to treat this type of skin. Treatments on the face are also slightly different, for example mild cleansers and moisturizers may be needed on the cheeks, while anti-acne products with benzoyl peroxide may be needed in the T-zone. Whatever your skin type, keep using sunscreen for protection from ultraviolet radiation, and avoid direct sun exposure by wearing sunglasses or wide-brimmed hats. Avoid smoking and maintain your fluid intake every day. And don't forget to wash your face diligently every day and use a moisturizer afterwards, especially when going to sleep. Also avoid sleeping with your face still wearing makeup. If you wear make-up, adjust it to your skin type. If you are still unsure of the best way to treat or brighten your facial skin, consult a dermatologist who can recommend proper skin care.
